Tommaso Mocenigo was elected doge while he was the Venetian ambassador at Cremona. Mocenigo engaged in a number of wars with the Genoese and the Turks which gained the senate numerous new territories, including Dalmatia. On his death bed, Mocenigo warned the council against electing Francesco Foscari as his successor. Tommaso Mocenigo is buried in the Basilica dei Santi Giovanni e Paolo.
