Leonardo Loredan’s reign came at a time of turmoil for the Republic of Venice. Wars with France and the Papal States left Venice weakened both politically and territorially, and the battle of Diu (India) in 1509 led to the Venetians loosing their profitable spice trade routes to the Portuguese. Doge Loredan suffered ill health in his latter years and eventually died after contracting gangrene. Soldini of Leonardo Loredan are the most commonly found Venetian coin in England. Leondardo Loredan is buried in the church of San Zanipolo.
