MATCHLOCK MUSKET A musket fired by a piece of burning match being held in the lock which, when the trigger was pulled, would contact with powder in the pan to set off the charge. Preferred term 100019 -
MATERNITY BLOCK A hospital block where pregnant women are accommodated and receive medical treatment before and after child birth. Preferred term 92578 -
MATERNITY CLINIC A self-contained establishment (out-patients) where pregnant women receive check-ups, counselling and medical treatment. Preferred term 92579 -

MATHEMATICAL INSTITUTE A building used by an organization or society instituted to promote the study of mathematics through lectures, research, etc. Preferred term 92582 -

MATS Articles, usually woven from coarse fibres or made from hard wearing materials (eg. rubber or cork) used to protect the floor or for lying, sitting or kneeling on. Preferred term 109113 -

MAUL A massive hammer of wood, stone or iron. Preferred term 96947 -
MAUSOLEUM A monumental burial place, usually for a single person or family. Preferred term 70087 -
MAYCRETE HUT A prefabricated structure of reinforced concrete posts supporting a pitched roof frame with an infilling of sawdust concrete panels. Produced by Maycrete Ltd during WWII. Preferred term 159298 -
MAYORS RESIDENCE The official residence of the chief officer of the municipal corporation of a city or borough in England. Preferred term 92583 -
MAYPOLE A high pole, painted with spiral stripes of different colours and decked with flowers, erected on an open space, often the village green, for merrymakers to dance around on May Day. Preferred term 70103 -
MAZE A confusing and baffling network of winding and intercommunicating paths, often bordered by high hedges or walls. Some early examples are believed to have had ritual uses. Use more specific type where known. Preferred term 69024 -
