NEWCOMEN ATMOSPHERIC ENGINE A single acting, non-rotative beam engine worked by atmospheric pressure. Preferred term 138006 -
NEWEL POST The post at the centre of a winding staircase from which the steps radiate; or the post, supporting the handrail and string, at the angle of a square staircase. Preferred term 138007 -
NEWEL STAIRCASE A staircase where the vertical members are placed at the ends of flights to support the strings, handrails, trimmers and bearers. Preferred term 138008 -

NEWSPAPER OFFICE A building or set of rooms where a newspaper is compiled and produced, before being printed. May include facilities for printing. Preferred term 71636 -
NICHE A shallow, ornamental recess, often arched and semicircular in plan, set in a wall or pier and usually containing a statue or ornament. Preferred term 138009 -
NICKEL a hard metal used in a lot of alloys. Preferred term 84430 -
NICKEL MINE Also use with other metal ores extracted and MINE where relevant. Preferred term 69267 -
NIGHT FIGHTER STATION WATCH OFFICE A two storey building with a watch office on the ground floor and a control room above. Originally based on drawing number 12096/4. Preferred term 140545 -
NIGHT STAIR A staircase, usually leading from a dormitory, used by monks to enter the transept of a monastic church. Preferred term 138010 -
NIGHTCLUB An establishment open at night for refreshment and entertainment. Preferred term 92752 -
NISSEN HUT A prefabricated structure of a steel frame clad in corrugated iron. Semi-circular in section they were used as accommodation for the armed forces and, during WWII, as emergency housing for bombed out civilians. Also used for storage. Preferred term 97128 -
NITRATE A fertilizer containing nitrogen. Preferred term 84339 -
NITRATE OF SODA A fertilizer containing nitrogen, derived from sodium nitrate. Preferred term 79100 -
NITRATE WORKS A building or site producing nitrogen-rich fertilizer. Preferred term 92753 -
NITRE BED A large bed surrounded by an earthwork and filled with composing vegetable matter and animal waste. This was used to produce Nitre, a constituent of gunpowder. Preferred term 84902 -
NITROCELLULOSE POWDER FACTORY A factory or works principally engaged in the production of a single base propellant, using nitrocellulose without the addition of nitroglycerine. Preferred term 99578 -
NITROGLYCERINE WORKS A works or factory where nitroglycerine is manufactured. Preferred term 92754 -
NOBLE COMBER A machine for combing out wool, cleaning out extraneous matter and short fibres and laying the combed long fibres more or less parallel to each other as required for Worsted spinning. Preferred term 138011 -
NOCTURNAL An astronomical instrument for telling the time at night. The date is set on the nocturnal then its pointers lined up with the Pole Star and the two primary stars in the Great Bear, thus allowing an approximate time to be read off. Preferred term 97399 -
NODAL POINT A designated area, usually sited at a strategic crossroads, with fixed defences such as pillboxes, anti tank ditches and gun emplacements, designed to act as a rallying point for defenders. Preferred term 142868 -
NOGGING A section of stone or brickwork employed in a timber-framed building to fill the spaces between uprights or studs. Preferred term 138883 -
NON ANTIQUITY Use to identify a feature, previously thought to be a monument but now disproved, or to avoid erroneous identification as a monument in future. Where a feature is regarded as an antiquity, but is unclassified, use SITE. Preferred term 71099 -

NON CONDENSING STEAM ENGINE A steam engine from which the spent exhaust steam either passes out to the atmosphere and is lost, or in some cases is used as process steam in a factory. Preferred term 138012 -
