MORT SAFE An iron frame placed over a coffin or at the entrance to a grave to act as a deterrent against resurrectionists. Preferred term 92694 -
MORTAR (VESSEL) A mixing or grinding vessel. Preferred term 96410 -
MORTAR (WEAPON) A gun designed to fire shells, etc at a high angle. Preferred term 95892 -
MORTAR BOMB A muzzle loaded explosive projectile fired from a mortar. Typically they are short range and low velocity with a high arcing trajectory. Preferred term 163923 -
MORTAR CRATER A depression in the ground caused by the explosion of a mortar shell. Preferred term 151882 -
MORTAR MILL A mill used for the production of mortar; a combination of sand, lime and water, used to make the joints between courses of bricks in buildings. In more recent times cement has replaced lime to create a quicker drying mortar. Preferred term 69065 -
MORTARIUM A Roman mixing vessel with a gritted inner surface. Preferred term 96869 -
MORTICE AND TENON JOINT The most common form of joint between two timbers meeting at right angles or at an oblique angle, the mortice being a socket cut in one timber to receive the tenon projection of the other. Preferred term 137988 -
MORTUARY A building or room used for holding, viewing, identifying or examining dead bodies prior to burial or cremation. Preferred term 70088 -

MORTUARY ENCLOSURE A subrectangular earthen enclosure defined by a ditch, usually with an internal bank, assumed to have been used for the primary exposure or burial of human remains in the Neolithic period prior to secondary burial elsewhere. Preferred term 70089 -
