Republican moneyer, C. Julius Caesar, or Julius Caesar. He is best known for his role in the transformation of the Roman Republic into the Roman Empire. He conquered Gaul and was a member of the First Triumvirate, but after the collapse of that political alliance became an enemy of Pompey the Great's and crossed the Rubicon to march on Rome as part of the struggle. He attained multiple Consulships and was named dictator perpetuus, a move which sparked the jealousy of C. Cassius and concern of M. Junius Brutus. These two men headed the plot which led to the assasination of Julius Caesar on March 15, 44 BC.
