PALETTE (ARMOUR) A piece of armour used to protect the armpit. Preferred term 97677 -
PALETTE (ARTISTS) A board or slab, often with a thumb hole in it, used by an artist to hold and mix colours on. Preferred term 97138 -
PALETTE (COSMETIC) A thin flat slab used to mix cosmetics on. Preferred term 96150 -
PALING A fence made of pales. Preferred term 96093 -
PALISADE An enclosure of stakes driven into the ground, sometimes for defensive purposes. Preferred term 68897 -
PALISADE DITCH A ditch associated with a palisade. Preferred term 100533 -
PALISADED ENCLOSURE An enclosed settlement surrounded by a single or double row of close-set timbers embedded in a foundation trench, without ditches or banks. Preferred term 68991 -
PALISADED HILLTOP ENCLOSURE A small, defended settlement dating to the Early Iron Age, located on spurs, promontories or hilltops. The defences are marked by single or double trenches which originally held substantial palisades. Preferred term 68860 -
PALISADED HOMESTEAD A small, defensive settlement, usually consisting of one dwelling and ancillary buildings, surrounded by a palisade. Preferred term 68983 -
PALISADED SETTLEMENT A settlement site enclosed within a timber palisade. Preferred term 68984 -
PALISSADE Originally a fence against which trees and shrubs were grown. Later used to describe a row of trees and shrubs forming a hedge clipped into a green wall. Preferred term 92848 -
PALL A religious cloth often used to cover coffins. Preferred term 95992 -

PALLET CHAMBER A room in which servants slept. Preferred term 138051 -
PALM CUP A round bottomed container to be held in the palm of the hand. Preferred term 100071 -
PALM HOUSE A greenhouse used for growing palms and/or tropical plants. Preferred term 92849 -
PALM KERNELS The edible seed of the palm tree. Preferred term 84252 -
PALM OIL Oil derived from palms, used for a variety of purposes. Preferred term 79118 -
PALMETTE A decorative motif representing a palm leaf. Often painted, incised or applied in relief, can occur singly or as a repeating pattern. Preferred term 138886 -
PALSTAVE A bronze axehead of middle or late Bronze Age date in which the side flanges and the bar/stop on both faces are connected, forming a single hafting aid. Some types feature a side loop to further assist hafting. Preferred term 96375 -
PAN A broad container, usually used for cooking. Preferred term 96793 -
PAN HOUSE A component of a salt works housing iron pans where the brine was evaporated above a furnace and flue. Such houses were lightly built in order to allow the heat and steam to escape. Preferred term 140334 -
