PIT WHEEL The main gearwheel in a water mill, sharing the same shaft as the exterior waterwheel but placed within the mill. Preferred term 139517 -

PITCH A dark, viscous substance obtained, from the distillation of wood tar or turpentine, and used as a sealant for caulking the seams of a ship or boat. Preferred term 79133 -
PITCH MAKING HEARTH A hearth constructed specifically for the manufacture of pitch. Preferred term 142966 -
PITCHBACK WHEEL A waterwheel where the incoming supply of water is introduced at the top of the wheel and drops onto the paddles, or buckets, of the wheel which rotates in the reverse direction to that of the incoming flow. Preferred term 138091 -
PITCHBACK WHEEL A type of waterwheel where the incoming supply of water leaves a launder near the top of the wheel, and drops onto the paddles or buckets of the wheel which rotates in the reverse direction to that of the incoming flow. Preferred term 92932 -
PITCHER A large jug, usually rounded with a narrow neck, used for holding liquids. Preferred term 96796 -
PITCHFORK A long handled fork with two or three long curved tines for tossing straw or hay. Preferred term 95797 -
PITHEAD BATHS A building containing the colliery showers. Also often containing first aid and mine rescue facilities. Preferred term 78797 -
PIVOT A piece of stone or timber with a small cup shaped depression in its upper surface, set into the ground to fasten a door, gate, window etc to allow it to open and shut. Preferred term 159174 -
