SPECTACLES (HUMAN) Lenses worn in a frame designed to improve or protect the vision of the wearer. Preferred term 100049 -

SPEEDFRAME A general name given to a series of machines which successively reduce the diameter of rovings before the final spinning into yarn. Preferred term 138264 -
SPEEDWAY TRACK A specially prepared track used for fast motorcycle racing. Preferred term 93889 -

SPELTER Zinc, now mainly used for smelted zinc but has been used to include zinc ores. Preferred term 83914 -

SPERE A screen, with a wide central opening, or multiple narrower openings, spanning the lower end of a medieval hall, screening the cross entry and defining the screen, or cross, passage. Preferred term 138265 -
SPERE TRUSS The structure across the lower end of a medieval hall containing the spere, its supporting posts and tie-beam. Preferred term 138266 -
SPHINX A sculptured, carved or moulded representation of an imaginary creature with a human head and breast combined with the body of a lion. Preferred term 93382 -
SPICES Aromatic vegetable substances, either in their natural form or ground, used to add flavour or scent to food. Preferred term 79191 -
SPICES AND SEASONINGS Various flavoured aromatic and savoury substances, such as herbs, salt etc, used to impart flavour to food. Preferred term 109193 -
SPIDER A four-armed metal coupling, positioned at the centre of a windmill's sails, connected to the front of the striking rod and the shutter bars of all the sails, causing the shutters to open and close. Preferred term 140135 -
SPIDER BILLET A barracks comprising eight barrack blocks accessed via a central corridor. With four blocks on either side of the corridor the whole structure resembled a spider in plan. Preferred term 160406 -
SPIGOT A form of stopper used to regulate the flow of liquid, often used in a barrel. Preferred term 96413 -
SPIGOT MORTAR EMPLACEMENT A pit or emplacement surrounding a concrete pedestal, or 'thimble', which was used to mount a spigot mortar. Deployed by the Home Guard during WWII as an anti invasion measure. Preferred term 87142 -

SPINDLE WHORL The weight attached to a spindle used for handspinning. Preferred term 97061 -
SPINNING MACHINE A machine used for drawing out and twisting together short fibres to make a yarn or thread. Use more specific term where known. Preferred term 138267 -
SPINNING MILL A mill or factory in which raw cotton, wool, nylon or other material is spun into yarn or thread. Preferred term 69326 -
