Object types that the Scheme uses

These terms are from the FISH Archaeological Objects Thesaurus (Forum on Information Standards in Heritage - FISH).

SQUARE ENCLOSURE A square shaped area of land enclosed by a boundary ditch, bank, wall, palisade or similar barrier. Small square enclosures (with sides of less than c.20m) have been interpreted as the remains of square barrows of Iron Age date. Preferred term 70367 -
SQUARE PARTERRE A parterre consisting of square beds containing ornamental plants often laid out in intricate patterns mimicking embroidery. Preferred term 159271 -
SQUARE RIGGED VESSEL A vessel with a type of rigging where the main driving sails are fixed to yards which lie square to the mast. Preferred term - -
SQUASH COURT A place where the game of squash is played. Preferred term 71746 -
Squash Racquets Court Narrow term 162639 -
SQUATTER SETTLEMENT A site occupied by people who have no legal right to the land or buildings on it. Preferred term 93395 -
SQUATTERS COTTAGE A cottage erected over a short period of time, by people who had no legal right to the land. Squatters were often tolerated by the landlord as they provided cheap labour. Preferred term 93396 -
SQUEEZER A device to extract juice, usually from fruit. Preferred term 96971 -
SQUINCH One or more arches built across an angle between two walls to support a polygonal or circular structure. Preferred term 138277 -
SQUINT An aperture cut obliquely in a wall, usually of a chancel, affording a view between the high altar and the aisles or side chapels. Preferred term 138278 -
STABLE A building in which horses are accommodated. Preferred term 70413 -
STABLEHANDS LODGINGS A place of accommodation for a stablehand. Preferred term 93397 -

STACK STAND A platform for storing winter fodder. Preferred term 68665 -
STACK YARD A farmyard or enclosure containing regularly built stacks of hay, corn, peas etc. Preferred term 93399 -
STADDLE BARN A threshing barn, usually timber framed which is raised on staddle stones. Preferred term 162637 -
STADDLE STONE Mushroom-shaped stones used to raise the floor of barns, granaries etc. above ground level, to prevent vermin gaining access to stored grain and fodder. Preferred term 68666 -
STADDLE STONE A short, tapered, vertical stone supporting a rough stone disc so resembling a toadstool, often forming one of several uprights on which a timber structure, such as a granary rests, protecting the building from damp and vermin. Preferred term 138279 -
STADIUM A large, usually unroofed building with tiers of seats for spectators built in various shapes and enclosing a field used for sports events. Preferred term 71535 -
STAFF A long stick or rod used as an aid in walking, climbing etc. Where it is a weapon use quarterstaff or staff weapon. Where there is another use, use the appropriate term eg surveying staff. Preferred term 96735 -
STAFF WEAPON A long shafted weapon with a head that can be edged and/or pointed. Preferred term 97094 -
STAGE A raised platform, especially in a theatre or auditorium, for the use of performers or speakers etc. Preferred term 139467 -

STAINED GLASS Glass that has been coloured by fusing glass with a metallic oxide film or by burning pigment into the surface. Preferred term 138280 -

STAINED GLASS WORKSHOP A place where stained glass is manufactured, traditionally for church windows. Preferred term 69096 -
