STONE AVENUE A monument consisting of parallel lines of standing stones, which appears to mark out an approach to another monument or monuments. Preferred term 70189 -
STONE AXE FACTORY Source from which stone utilized for the manufacture of non-flint artefacts, including axes, was obtained. Applied only to sources exploited during the Neolithic and earlier Bronze Age. Do not use for flint mining or knapping sites. Preferred term 69115 -
STONE BLOCK A piece of stone, usually shaped, of uncertain origin or use. Preferred term 70414 -
STONE BLOCKS Worked pieces of stone. Use more specific type of stone where known. Preferred term 87415 -
STONE BREAKING YARD A place where inmates of a workhouse or prison carried out stone breaking. Preferred term 93438 -
STONE CARVING An inscription or illustration carved into the surface of a stone wall or other architectural element. Preferred term 139797 -
STONE CIRCLE An approximately circular or oval setting of spaced, usually freestanding, upright stones. More than one circle may be present, arranged concentrically. Preferred term 70190 -
STONE COVE A group of, usually three, standing stones forming a square with an open side and often found with a stone circle. Preferred term 142014 -

STONE CRUSHING PLANT A place where pieces of stone are crushed and ground. Preferred term 93440 -
STONE DISPATCH BUILDING A building in a quarry consisting of a series of loading bays in which stone is loaded onto wagons. Preferred term 93441 -
STONE DRESSING FLOOR A place where stone is dressed or shaped for use in building, etc. Preferred term 69075 -
STONE DUST Powder made from particles of stone used in mining to make the coal dust in the air less combustible. Preferred term 86257 -
STONE EXTRACTION SITE Buildings, sites and structures associated with the extraction of stone. Includes preparation processes. Preferred term 93442 -
STONE GRUBBING SITE A site used for the small scale extraction and working of surface boulders. Preferred term 69076 -
