Provosts Lodgings Narrow term 93029 -

PUBLIC ASSISTANCE INSTITUTION Name given to a workhouse after 1929. The Local Government Act of 1929 abolished Poor Law Unions and Guardians, and control passed to public assistance authorities run by county boroughs and county councils.
