RAPID LOADING STATION A group of buildings and machines, usually situated close to the pithead, enabling the rapid, mechanized loading of goods wagons with coal. Preferred term 86336 -
RAPIER A long narrow two edged sword with a guarded hilt, used as a thrusting weapon. Preferred term 95213 -
RASP A tool for smoothing objects. Preferred term 97411 -
RATCHET RATTLE An instrument whirled to produce sound by a piece of flexible wood hitting against a ratchet wheel. Preferred term 95515 -
RATTLE A hollow instrument containing material that produces sound when shaken. Preferred term 95502 -
RAVELIN In fortification, a detached triangular outwork consisting of two battered faces forming a salient angle. Usually positioned in the ditch in front of a rampart and between two bastions. Term mainly for military architecture from 15th century and later. Preferred term 140302 -
RAW COTTON Cotton which has not been processed. Preferred term 79152 -

RAZOR A sharp blade used for shaving. Preferred term 96160 -
REACTION TURBINE A prime mover which is rotated by the reaction from forcing a moving fluid to change direction. Preferred term 138157 -
READING ROOM A room set aside for the purpose of reading, such as in a library or a club. Preferred term 139136 -
READING ROOM A room in a library or institution providing periodicals, newspapers, etc. Preferred term 71424 -
REAL TENNIS COURT An indoor court where the ancient and complex sport of real tennis is played, eg. the court at Hampton Court Palace. Preferred term 93100 -
REAMER An object used in smithing to enlarge holes, consists of a tapered square rod. Preferred term 97054 -
REAPER A machine for cutting down cereal crops. Preferred term 95804 -
REAPING HOOK A hooked blade used to cut crops. All the blade is to one side of the handle rather than being on both sides as in a sickle. Preferred term 95805 -
Reaping Knife Narrow term - -
REAVE A stone wall, often of considerable length, built to divide an area of land. Most occur as part of extensive walled field systems. This is a regional term specific to Dartmoor and should not be used in other parts of the country. Preferred term 68652 -

REBUS A decorative feature, or non-heraldic badge, representing the name of a person connected with a building, often in the form of a graphic pun on the name. Preferred term 138159 -
