RAILWAY WORKERS TEMPORARY SETTLEMENT A temporary settlement or shanty-town erected by railway construction workers or "navvys". Preferred term 141889 -

RAILWAY WORKS An engineering works producing items for the railway other than rolling stock, such as signals, tracks, points, etc. Preferred term 69284 -

RAIN GAUGE An instrument for gauging the amount of rain which has fallen over a stated period. Preferred term 121256 -
RAINWATER HEAD The receptacle at the top of a rain-water pipe which gathers the water from one or more outlets or gutters on the roof. Preferred term 70456 -
RAINWATER HEAD A small tank or cistern, often lead or cast-iron and sometimes ornamented, that collects rainwater from a gutter or channel prior to it being discharged. Preferred term 138916 -
RAINWATER PIPE An exterior, vertical pipe that carries rainwater from a roof's guttering, usually to a drain. Preferred term 139432 -
RAISED BED A bed raised above the level of the surrounding walks. A common feature of medieval and Renaissance gardens. Preferred term 93094 -
RAISED CRUCK A cruck which is set in solid masonry above floor level but stretching a long way down the wall. Preferred term 138153 -
RAISED PAVEMENT A pavement walkway for pedestrian use, often raised above the level of a road or path. Preferred term 71127 -

RAISINS Dried or partially dried grapes eaten as a fruit. Preferred term 83091 -
RAKE A vertical vein of metallic ore, usually lead, occuring between walls of rock and cutting through the bedding. Often rakes have been worked from early times leaving deep trenches several km long, with adits leading off and shafts sunk at the side. Preferred term 103876 -
RAKE A toothed, handled tool used to drag objects either to gather them together eg grass or hay, or to level them out eg sand or earth. Preferred term 95803 -
RAKING CORNICE A cornice along the sloping edge of a pediment or gable. Preferred term 138154 -
RAKING STRUT One of a pair of straight or curved members set at an angle on the tie-beam and framed into a principal rafter, often supporting a purlin. Preferred term 138155 -
