SCULPTURE GARDEN A garden designed to display sculpture, publicly or privately. Preferred term 93251 -
SCUTCHING KNIFE A tool used in the separation of fibres from the bark in flax working. Preferred term 96966 -
SCUTCHING MACHINE A machine for cleansing flax, hemp or cotton and forming the fibres into a continuous wide lap or sheet in preparation for carding. Preferred term 138216 -
SCUTCHING MILL A mill for the removal by mechanical means of the dried wood and seeds of the flax and cotton plants after retting. The resulting 'tow' is then spun into linen and cotton respectively. Preferred term 69324 -
SCYTHE A mowing implement with a large curved blade and a long handle. Preferred term 95807 -
SCYTHE MILL A factory used for the manufacture of scythes. Preferred term 93252 -
SEA BATHING HOSPITAL A hospital where patients would bathe daily in the sea or in indoor salt-water swimming baths. Preferred term 93253 -
SEA BEACON A mark erected on or near danger or on shore as an aid to pilotage. Preferred term 93254 -
SEA DEFENCES Non-military maritime flood and erosion defences. Preferred term 69466 -
Sea Flame Device Narrow term 97266 -
SEA FORT A defensive construction situated in the sea, designed to protect the land from seabourne attack. The term applies mainly to those monuments built from around 1860 onwards. Preferred term 140331 -
SEA LION POOL A pool of water and associated ancillary buildings designed to accommodate sea lions. Preferred term 71496 -
SEA LOCK An entrance chamber from tide water to basin, with gates at each end and means of pumping up or lowering the level of water to suit. Preferred term 93255 -
SEA MARK A conspicuous object, such as a beacon, used by mariners to aid navigation at sea. Preferred term 69467 -
Sea Mill Narrow term 93256 -
SEA POOL Man made structure to contain tidal waters, often part of a LIDO, bathing or swimming complex at the sea edge. Preferred term 141517 -
SEA TERMINAL A port, dock or harbour where ferries, hovercraft, ocean liners and cargo vessels can load and unload. May include road and/or rail terminals for transportation to the port. Preferred term 93257 -
Sea Wall Narrow term 93258 -
SEAGULL TRENCH A trench in the form of a flattened 'W' with a flat concrete roof covered in turf, supported on concrete pillars. The name derives from the resemblance to a child's drawing of a seagull in flight. Preferred term 152399 -
SEAL A piece of wax, lead, paper etc, with a stamped design, attached to a document as a guarantee of authenticity. Preferred term 95398 -
SEAL BOX A small, usually hinged, box made of copper alloy which protected a seal. Preferred term 95400 -

SEAL MATRIX The object used to make impressions in wax as seals. Preferred term 95402 -
SEALING WAX Wax used to seal letters, envelopes, documents, etc. Preferred term 95403 -
SEAMENS CHURCH A place of worship specifically for mariners and their families. Preferred term 93260 -
SEAMENS HOSPITAL A hospital for the medical and surgical treatment of sailors and/or their families. For Royal Naval seamen use ROYAL NAVAL HOSPITAL. Preferred term 93261 -
