These terms are from the FISH Archaeological Objects Thesaurus (Forum on Information Standards in Heritage - FISH).

STRIKING GEAR A mechanism within a windmill, attached to the striking rod, allowing the opening and closing of the shutters or vanes of patent sails. Preferred term 140125 -
STRIKING ROD An iron bar or rod running through the core of a windmill's windshaft that causes the opening and shutting of the vanes on patent sails. Preferred term 140403 -
STRING A sloping timber in a staircase holding the ends of treads and risers. Preferred term 138309 -
STRING Flexible, twisted fibres, joined together, for tying objects. Preferred term 96417 -
STRING Line, cord or thread, especially that used for tying up parcels, etc. Also use for "twine", i.e. twisted thread, for the same purpose, and medieval equivalents, e.g. "packthread". Preferred term 142093 -
STRING COURSE A horizontal, moulded band, usually projecting, running across a wall, often indicating the position of a building's interior floor. Preferred term 138310 -

STRIP FIELD An area of agriculturally used land, which is divided into small, elongated, rectangular fields running parallel to each other. Preferred term 140259 -
STRIP LYNCHET A terraced field usually found on hillsides. Comprising a flat strip of land, called the tread, and a steep, scarped lynchet or edge, called the riser. Preferred term 68632 -
STRONGPOINT A fortifed position, often including fieldworks or defensive structures, designed to keep enemy forces engaged to allow reinforcements to be mobilized. Preferred term 160386 -
STROP A leather strap for sharpening a razor. Preferred term 97065 -
STRUCTURAL COMPONENT A part of a building or structure that is an element of the construction. Preferred term 138311 -
STRUCTURAL PLAN A plan form of a structure or building. Preferred term 138312 -
STRUCTURAL TIMBER A substantial piece of timber which is part of, and integral to, the structure of a building. Preferred term 96123 -
STRUCTURE A construction of unknown function, either extant or implied by archaeological evidence. If known, use more specific type. Preferred term 70420 -
STRUT A member whose purpose is to keep two other members apart, so acting in a state of compression. Preferred term 138313 -
STUB TIEBEAM A block in the position of a tiebeam. Preferred term 138314 -
STUD A subsidiary member, usually vertical, in a framed wall or partition. Preferred term 138315 -
STUD A projection on which an object is fastened or which can pass through eyelets to fasten. Preferred term 96503 -
STUD FARM A farm where stallions and mares are kept for breeding. Preferred term 93453 -
STUD FASTENER A projecting stud which fastens into a socket. Preferred term 96647 -
STUDDED DOOR A planked or battened door, with large nails or pegs with projecting heads keeping it intact. Preferred term 138316 -
Student Accommodation Purpose built accommodation for students built by a private company rather than a college or university. Narrow term 163219 -

STUDENTS UNION A building used, as a meeting place and administration block, by an organization run for the benefit of students at a school, college or university. Preferred term 93455 -
