SULPHUR ORE Ore containing a high proportion of sulphur. Preferred term 87162 -
SULPHUR STORE A building used for storing Sulphur, a highly inflammable chemical element used in the manufacture of matches, gunpowder and sulphuric acid. It is also used in bleaching, for vulcanizing rubber and as a disinfectant. Preferred term 93462 -
SULPHURIC ACID Corrosive, dense, oily acid, usually in aqueous solution, used in the chemical industry. Preferred term 97131 -
SUMMERHOUSE A building in a garden or park designed to provide a shady retreat from the heat of the sun. Preferred term 93463 -
SUN DISC An object representing the sun, made of bronze or gold usually dating from the European Bronze Age. Preferred term 96037 -
SUN LOUNGE A sitting room fitted with large windows for the purpose of admitting the maximum amount of sunlight. Preferred term 140476 -
SUNDAY SCHOOL A school in which instruction is given on a Sunday, especially such a school for children connected with a parish or congregation. Preferred term 71447 -
SUNDIAL A structure used to show the time of day by means of the sun shining on a 'gnomon', the shadow of which falls on the surface of the dial which is marked with a diagram showing the hours. Can be freestanding, usually on a pillar, or fixed to a building. Preferred term 69659 -
SUNDIAL A device for telling the time by the sun, using the shadow cast by a gnomon, or sometimes a spot of light through a small hole. They were often used for checking the accuracy of clocks. They range from panels on the sides of churches to pocket watch size. Preferred term 95316 -
