Object types that the Scheme uses

These terms are from the FISH Archaeological Objects Thesaurus (Forum on Information Standards in Heritage - FISH).

RING BARROW A circular bank surrounding an area where burials were placed. Preferred term 70009 -
RING CAIRN A low, wide, circular ring or bank of stones surrounding an open, roughly circular area which is (or was initially) free of cairn material. The inner and outer faces of the bank may be kerbed. Preferred term 70049 -
RING CRYPT A semicircular crypt below the apse of a church. Preferred term 138174 -
RING DITCH Circular or near circular ditches, usually seen as cropmarks. Use the term where the function is unknown. Ring ditches may be the remains of ploughed out round barrows, round houses, or of modern features such as searchlight emplacements. Preferred term 70407 -
RING ENCLOSURE A small circular enclosure defined by a turf or earthern bank. Preferred term 70698 -
RING GROOVE A gulley in the form of a circle for holding vertical posts in the walls of iron age round houses. Preferred term 138175 -
RING MONEY (CURRENCY) Silver rings believed to have been used in the Hebrides and Irish Sea regions during the Viking period, and derived from Hiberno-Viking arm rings. Preferred term 95428 -
RING MONEY (NON CURRENCY) Penannular objects of late Bronze Age, usually gold and too small to be worn on arms. Preferred term 99624 -

RINGWORK A defensive bank and ditch, circular or oval in plan, surrounding one or more buildings. Preferred term 68844 -
RINGWORK AND BAILEY An enclosure within a bailey which contained a keep and sometimes took the place of a motte. Preferred term 68845 -
Ripe Charge House A storehouse for components used in the manufacture of gunpowder. Narrow term 93142 -
RIPPLER An instrument to remove the seeds from flax. Preferred term 97055 -
RISER The vertical face of a step. Preferred term 138919 -
RITUAL FLAIL A flail used for the mortification of the flesh. Preferred term 96060 -
RITUAL PIT A pit which appears to have been dug for, or which contains, objects apparently deposited for reasons other than storage, disposal or extraction. Index with principal object types. Preferred term 70178 -
RITUAL SHAFT A shaft which appears to have been dug for, or which contains objects apparently deposited for, reasons other than storage, disposal or extraction (eg. of stone, water, etc). Index with principal object types. Preferred term 70179 -

RIVER DOCK An artificial area of open water, situated on a river, enclosed by masonry and fitted with dock gates in which ships can be repaired, loaded/unloaded or berthed. Preferred term 70301 -

RIVER GUNBOAT A small warship with a shallow draught. Used for patrol duties and shore bombardment on major rivers. Preferred term - -

RIVER INTAKE GAUGE A balance engine used to replenish the water levels of a river by transferring water from a reservoir or other supply. Preferred term 93144 -
