HORIZONTAL STEAM ENGINE A steam engine in which the cylinder, crosshead and crankshaft lie in a horizontal line, as opposed to vertical designs. Preferred term 137865 -
HORIZONTAL WATERMILL A water mill where the waterwheel directly drives a vertical shaft with grindstones on. Preferred term 92263 -
HORN (MUSIC) A trumpet type of instrument made from or in imitation of an animal horn. Preferred term 95486 -

HORN WORKING SITE A site used for the production of items derived from animal horns. Preferred term 69197 -
HORNCORE PIT A pit lined with the bony cores of animal horns. Thought to date from the 17th/18th centuries and believed to have been used in the tanning industry although some may have been used for casting cannon. Preferred term 69198 -

HORSE ENGINE A device or engine powered by one or more horses or donkeys walking around a circular track and harnessed so as to turn a large toothed wheel, either in the same plane or above, which turned smaller wheels operating machinery. Preferred term 137866 -
HORSE ENGINE HOUSE A round or polygonal building containing a HORSE ENGINE. Commonly found on farms next to the threshing barn, where it is used to power the machinery. Preferred term 71546 -
