BARBED AND TANGED ARROWHEAD A triangular arrowhead retouched to form a central tang and lateral barbs. The sides may be straight or concave. Preferred term 95162 -
BARBED POINT A bone or antler point with rows of barbs, usually on one side only. Preferred term 97328 -
BARBED WIRE ENTANGLEMENT One or more coils of barbed wire intended to impede the advance of hostile troops. Preferred term 160540 -
BARBED WIRE OBSTRUCTION Rolls of barbed wire with supporting metal posts designed to impede enemy advance. Preferred term 97262 -
BARBERS SHOP A hairdressing establishment for men. Preferred term 91139 -
BARBICAN Any earthworks, walling, bastion or fortified outwork, or combination of these, generally with ditch or moat. Preferred term 68819 -
BARE FACED DOVETAIL JOINT A joint in which a dovetailed timber's surface is proud of the receiving member on one side. Preferred term 137407 -
BARE FACED TENON JOINT A joint in which the tenon retains one or more of the original sides of the timber. Preferred term 137408 -
BARGE Shallow draft cargo vessel, often broad beamed and flat bottomed, powered by engine and or sail. Preferred term - -
BARGE BED A foreshore structure to prevent barges from sinking in the river mud. Made by placing chalk on fascines of brushwood, which is in some cases retained by a timber revetement. Preferred term 139779 -
BARGE BOARD A board fixed at the gable end to purlins, often decorated. Preferred term 137409 -
BARILLA A plant, Salsola soda, burnt to produce alkali. Preferred term 84156 -
BARILLA MILL A mill used for the preparation of Barilla, an ash of burnt seaweed that was used for the production of soda. Preferred term 146424 -
BARK The outer layer of tissue on a tree or woody plant, often used in the dyeing and tanning industries. Preferred term 78902 -
BARK HOUSE A building used for storing tree bark. Preferred term 71467 -
Bark Kettle Narrow term 151799 -
BARK MILL Mill for grinding bark usually for use in the tanning industry. Use with power type(s), eg. WATERMILL where known. Preferred term 69304 -
BARK PEELERS HUT A round hut, similar to a CHARCOAL BURNERS HUT, associated with forest industry. The bark was later used in the tanning process. Preferred term 68962 -
BARK POT A large cauldron used in the making of a preservative from the bark of spruce, fir or other conifers. The preservative was used to treat nets, sails and other fishing gear. Preferred term 151798 -

BARN PLATFORM A levelled area of ground on which a barn is built. A platform is often the sole surviving evidence for a barn. Preferred term 68548 -
BAROMETER An instrument for measuring atmospheric pressure by its effects on mercury in a glass tube. It can also be used to measure altitude and depth and is especially used for predicting the weather. Preferred term 95312 -
BARQUE A sailing vessel, generally with three masts, square rigged on the fore and main mast. Preferred term - -
