CLAMP A temporary structure used for the firing of bricks or tiles. Unfired bricks or tiles were stacked upon a layer of fuel (usually wood) and then surrounded by a wall of old bricks and covered by a layer of mud or clay. The clamp was then fired. Preferred term 111273 -

CLAPPERS A simple instrument where two pieces of material are manipulated to knock together. Preferred term 97181 -
CLAPPING QUOIN A quoin, usually of stone, with a concave rebate at one corner forming the surface against which the rounded edge of a canal lock gate turns, making a kind of hinge. Preferred term 143478 -

CLASP A contrivance of interlocking parts used to fasten objects together. Preferred term 96248 -

CLASPED PURLIN A purlin that rests against the lower surface of a principal rafter and is supported by a queen post, collar or raking strut. Preferred term 137559 -

Claustral Buildings Narrow term 91493 -
CLAY Fine grained earth which becomes more plastic when water is added. Mainly used in the manufacture of bricks, pottery and other ceramics. Preferred term 78949 -

CLAY EXTRACTION SITE Buildings, sites and structures associated with the extraction of clay. Preferred term 91495 -
